What’s close by

East Hill is directly east of downtown Vernon. Depending on where you live on the hill, that puts a lot within walking or cycling distance:

Downtown Vernon: shops, restaurants, coffee, banks and services.
Okanagan Regional Library, Vernon branch: on 30th Avenue downtown.
Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre: on 33rd Street.
Vernon Recreation Centre: on 37th Avenue, home to the Vernon Aquatic Centre, a fitness gym and the Halina Senior Citizens Centre.
Vernon Jubilee Hospital: just down the hill.
Vernon Secondary School (VSS): near the middle of the neighbourhood.
Lakeview Park: with the free “Peanut Pool” wading pool and spray park.
Polson Park: near downtown, with its floral clock, Japanese garden, playground and trails.

Something new on the way

The Regional District of North Okanagan is planning the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre in downtown Vernon. It’s planned to bring the Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Greater Vernon Museum together under one roof, with event space and a public plaza. Buses and regional trips

Vernon is served by BC Transit’s Vernon Regional Transit System. Route 90 connects Vernon with UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, which helps students and commuters heading south. Routes and schedules change, so check BC Transit’s Vernon route map for stops near any home you’re considering.

Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is about 30 minutes south of Vernon by car, according to Tourism Vernon.

The honest trade-offs

Hills

It’s called East Hill for a reason. Walking down to downtown is easy; walking back up with groceries is a workout. An e-bike or a small cart can help.

Winter

Vernon gets snow and ice. Sidewalks and steep streets can be slippery, so good boots and traction aids are worth it.

Recreation trips

Kalamalka Lake beaches are about 10 to 15 minutes away by car, and SilverStar is about 30 minutes. Those trips are harder without a vehicle, so many car-light households keep one car, share one, or rent when needed.

What to look for in a car-light home

Location on the hill. Homes lower on the hill, closer to downtown, usually mean shorter, flatter walks.
Safe storage. A garage, shed or covered spot for bikes and e-bikes.
Charging. An outdoor outlet or the electrical capacity to add an EV or e-bike charger later.
Transit stops. Check how far the nearest stop is, and which routes use it.
Parking rules. If you still own a car, check whether there’s off-street parking.
