Downtown Vernon From Your Front Door: What’s Within Walking Distance of East Hill

Quick answer: From East Hill, much of downtown Vernon is within walking distance, depending on your street: the Vernon Public Art Gallery, the Museum and Archives of Vernon, the library, the Performing Arts Centre, the Recreation Centre, Polson Park and plenty of shops and restaurants. The Caetani Cultural Centre is right in the neighbourhood on Pleasant Valley Road.

I live in East Hill, and a big part of its appeal is how close it is to the heart of Vernon. It sits on the hillside directly east of downtown. Here’s a look at what’s within reach on foot, and how to judge the walk from a particular home.

Arts and culture

Caetani Cultural Centre: on Pleasant Valley Road in East Hill, in the 1895 Sommerville house.
Vernon Public Art Gallery: on 31st Avenue downtown. Tourism Vernon calls it the largest public gallery in the North Okanagan, with up to 20 exhibitions a year.
Museum and Archives of Vernon: on 32nd Avenue, with exhibits on Indigenous and local history.
Gallery Vertigo: on 30th Avenue, showing contemporary work.
Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre: on 33rd Street, for concerts, theatre and touring shows.

Coming soon: the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre

The Regional District of North Okanagan is planning a new Greater Vernon Cultural Centre downtown. It’s planned to house the Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Greater Vernon Museum under one roof, with event space and an outdoor plaza. The RDNO’s project page shows construction projected from 2025 to 2027/28, so check the RDNO for updates.

Parks close to downtown

Polson Park

According to the City of Vernon, Polson Park was established in 1908 when Samuel Polson donated the land. It’s home to the floral clock (installed in 1958), a Japanese garden (built in 1967), a playground, skateboard park, tennis courts, running track, trails and the Okanagan Science Centre.

Lakeview Park

Right in East Hill, Lakeview Park has three baseball diamonds, a playground and the free “Peanut Pool” wading pool and spray park, which reopened in summer 2024. My East Hill parks and things to do page has more.

How to judge the walk from a home

“Walking distance” means different things on a hill. Before you buy, I suggest:

Walk it both ways. Going down to downtown is easy. Coming back up is the real test.
Try it in winter. Vernon gets snow and ice, and steep sidewalks feel different in January.
Check the evening route. If you’ll walk home from the Performing Arts Centre or a restaurant, look at lighting and sidewalks.
Think about groceries. A cart, bike trailer or e-bike makes uphill errands easier.
Know your transit stops. BC Transit’s Vernon Regional Transit System can fill the gaps. Check the route map for stops near the home.

A little farther afield

Not everything is walkable. Kalamalka Lake beaches are about 10 to 15 minutes by car, SilverStar is about 30 minutes, and Kelowna International Airport is about 30 minutes south, according to Tourism Vernon. The Vernon Farmers’ Market runs at the Kal Tire Place parking lot on 43rd Avenue, which for most East Hill residents is an easy bike ride or short drive rather than a walk.
